Shunyi District (顺义区, Hanyu Pinyin: Shunyi Qü) lies to the northeast of urban Beijing (30 km from central Beijing), although it is still near the centre of the municipality. With the founding of the PRC, Shunyi switched over to Beijing rule (it was formerly part of Hebei) beginning in March 1958. Shunyi County became Shunyi District in 1998.
It encompasses 1,020 square kilometres and is divided into 19 towns, 2 sub-district offices and 424 administrative villages, housing 750,000.
Beijing Capital International Airport lies in the district's exclave, which officially belongs to Chaoyang District.
